Cooperative Publishing

Why Cooperative Publishing?

Unless you’ve already penned a New York Times bestseller, chances are the big national publishing houses aren’t beating down your door for a chance to publish your next book. The typical publishing house only prints a fraction of the manuscripts they receive each year. But what about self-publishing? This entails taking full responsibility for marketing and distributing your title. Did you know that the biggest book wholesalers do not purchase direct from authors, so you are dependent upon your own direct marketing to sell your book? Many book fairs and even independent bookstores will not purchase self-published books for resale to the public. And you’ll be disqualified from many literary awards as a self-published title.

That’s where we come in. With over 20 years in the publishing industry, we know the key players in all areas of the publishing process. We already have relationships with quality print-on-demand companies and also with retailers and distributors for major bookstores as well as many independent booksellers. By publishing your book using print-on-demand technology, we don’t have the costs associated with keeping a warehouse full of books until they sell. We print what we need when we need it. While we don’t accept every manuscript that is submitted to us, we do publish a wide array of titles, so submit your work to us and we’ll see if it is a good fit for our cooperative publishing model.

How does it work?

The first step in the process is for you to figure out who your audience is. Do you want to print your favorite uncle’s memoir to give as Christmas gifts to family & friends, or do you have a wider audience and want to distribute your title in retail outlets? We can help with either route you decide to go. Also think in terms of specifics…is this a book that is geared toward twenty-somethings starting their careers, or is this something that a history-buff would enjoy? These questions determine how we market and distribute your book and also contribute to the way it is designed.

Next, think about your budget. Publishing a book doesn’t have to break the bank, but with cooperative publishing, you are helping to underwrite the costs of publishing your book. We do charge a flat setup fee for any new title. This helps cover the administrative costs of reviewing your book, drafting a subsidy publishing agreement and managing the entire publishing process start to finish. If your book will be distributed in retail outlets, we make sure that an ISBN is properly assigned, and a UPC bar code is added to the back cover.

The next level of fees is largely dependent upon your audience, the content of your book and the level of editing, layout & design services necessary to get your title in print. You will be charged fees for editing services as well as layout & design services. We work with professionals in these areas to give your title an appearance you can be proud of. Just take a look at some of our titles, and you’ll see the kind of quality we produce.

Once we execute an agreement, we’ll give you an expected delivery date, and then we get started! You’ll be involved in every step of the process, with input on design as well as final proofing before we go to press.

The bottom line is that if you want to publish a book, we can help. If you are interested, please complete and submit our Author Questionnaire here and submit your manuscript for consideration to:
